Visual Anthropologist

From a young age, I found art thrilling and full of tension—not arising from nervousness, but from curiosity—bubbling with enthusiasm when a film or performance addresses social and moral themes, or when I am involved in a conversation about different cultural traditions and customs during an exhibition.

As an anthropologist, I am deeply interested in the ways societies function. I am intrigued by concepts such as community, culture, ethnicity, and identity—and fascinated by mechanisms such as ecology, sustainability, urban development, and politics.

I discovered a passion for filmmaking during my Bachelor Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, after which I developed and sharpened my filmmaking skills during my Master Visual Ethnography.

This portfolio serves as a guide through my visual projects.

The displacement of the Betawi after Indonesia’s independence marks a turning point for the Betawi’s identity because families were spatially separated. The film follows five Betawis, and along the way, the viewer uncovers how they adapted to their new environments.
